New Masterpiece for Brass Quintet: White Rose Elegy
The story….
In 1942, five University of Munich students and one professor, Hans Scholl, formed a clandestine, non-violent Nazi resistance movement known as the “White Rose.” Over the span of nine months, the
White Rose published and widely distributed six anti-Nazi leaflets calling on the German people to join the resistance. They were eventually caught and swiftly executed in 1943, but Hans Scholl and the others remain iconic and cherished figures.
In 2014, filmmaker Peter Logue created a short documentary about the “White Rose” movement titled
The Search for the White Rose. Caleb wrote the
original soundtrack for this film.
Canadian Brass recently recorded and released White Rose Elegy on the 2015 album Perfect Landing.
In December 2015, the combined forces of Canadian Brass and the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass and Percussion premiered a double brass rendition of the piece at David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall) at Lincoln Center in NYC.
